February Phoenix Employment UpdatePhoenix added 6,400 jobs, in December, well below expectations. Unemployment rose from 6.0 percent to 6.2 percent due to growth in the labor force.

Trade, Transportation & Utilities as well as Education and Health Services continue to lead the way adding 23,500 jobs. Financial Activities along with Professional and Business Services also reported strong gains adding 8,300 and 6,400 new jobs respectively. Manufacturing continues to struggle as it sheds an additional 2,000 jobs in December.

Phoenix’s unemployment rate remains lower than the Arizona rate (7.6%) and lower than the national rate (6.6%).
