It’s people like JLL’s Managing Director John Pierson, a former Honorary Commander at Luke Air Force Base, that demonstrate what it truly means to support our troops. John is one of the 97 members of the “Charlie” class of the Blue Blazer Squadron (BBS), an Alumni Association of the Honorary Commanders Committee of Fighter Country Partnership. As a member of BBS, John and several other Honorary Commanders provide support for the men and women of Luke Air Force Base. Just like our military support, the BBS can be called upon at a moment’s notice when the need for them arises. This includes their personal and professional resources and talents. Their most recent call to duty was for the Thunderbolt Cup at Luke Air Force Base.
The Thunderbird Cup is a two day event that brings all of the squadrons at the base together for a friendly Olympic–style competition. The competition tests their physical and mental readiness while giving them a break from their usual routines. It includes basketball, hockey shoot-out, ping pong, tug of war, softball, corn hole, poker, video games, and many other games.
The Blue Blazer Squadron supported the event by serving lunch to the airmen and families of the Luke Air Force Base during the event’s two day span.
“I always enjoy spending time around the men and women serving our country,” said John. “The respect and dedication they exhibit on a daily basis is inspiring.”
A few of the other programs that The Blue Blazer Squadron support include:
Operation Thunderbox – Operation Thunderbox collects and ships items like sunscreen, phone cards and powdered drinks to airmen deployed from Luke Air Force Base.
Unit Spouse and Family Support Fund – This fund helps Luke Air Force Base service members cope with the demands of being deployed, including helping families deal with separation. This program supports over 1,500 people a year.
Luke Airmen Memorial Fund – Fighter Country Foundation has created a fund to help airmen injured or killed in the line of duty. The fund provides financial support, comfort and, most importantly, honors these brave Americans.
Courageous Hearts – The Courageous Hearts pin-up fundraiser is operated through Fry’s Food Stores every year. Supporters can buy a heart at any local Fry’s to help support our military personnel. One hundred percent of the funds raised are donated to groups dedicated to supporting our heroes and their families, such as, Fighter Country Foundation, Arizona Heroes to Hometowns, Packages from Home, and USO.
FCP Honorary Commanders Golf Tournament – The annual golf tournament raises money to support programs of Luke Air Force Base. The tournament includes lunch, auctions and a raffle.
